New Legislation Requires Drivers to Use FMCSA Approved Physicians

Undeterred by ATA and OOIDA’s proposed delays, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) now requires drivers to have U.S. DOT physicals performed by qualified FMSCA doctors.

Under the new program, approved doctors must be listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The rule was required by federal law and addresses recommendations set forth by the National Transportation Safety Board.

According to FMCSA Administrator, Anne S. Ferro, “We have certified thousands of health professionals to conduct driver exams”. Medical examiners must adhere to monitoring and demonstrate competence through periodic training and testing. The new rule went into effect in May.
